Please read below our ‘Best Practice Advice’ before purchasing and consider what is your Primary use of the Vehicle? Whether it be indoor and/or outdoor? If it’s outdoor whether it is just for pavement use or for on-road use? If it’s for on-road use then please realise you may need to register this with your appropriate country legal transport body (such as the DVLA in the UK)
Before we will be able to confirm your order, we will contact you to ensure an appropriate assessment is conducted and documented. The below will form the main part of our assessment.
Assessment Criteria | Requirement Assessed |
SUITABILITY AND CAPABILITY
How does your Physical ability allow for driving? | Do you have the agility, balance, dexterity and strength to transfer onto/ off, and use, the equipment and controls and maintain driving position? |
How is your distance eyesight? | Do you have the ability to read a number plate from 12.3 metres for road vehicle usage? |
How is your general eyesight? | Can you see obstacles, kerbs, moving vehicles and pedestrians well enough to safely avoid such obstacles and avoid tipping over? |
How good is your awareness of your surroundings? | Do you appreciate the need for caution and consideration for pedestrians (who must have priority) and other vehicles? |
HOW TO CONTROL YOUR VEHICLE
The Functions and Performance | Ensure you understand the function of all controls and realise that all tests for best performance are based on dry even surfaces and variable driving conditions will affect these. |
Speed selection and Safe steering | Consider your speed selection under varying conditions, and the awareness of hazards from going too fast round corners, in slippery conditions, or in crowded situations. |
Braking | That you are comfortable stopping the vehicle safely whilst maintaining stability and aware of your braking distances. |
Slopes | You need to understand the Maximum Safe slope and be aware that wet and icy conditions, and surfaces covered in debris such as wet leaves will also significantly reduce the performance of your vehicle |
Visibility and conditions |
Are you aware of the dangers of poor visibility in late afternoon, evenings and at night and how wet and sunny conditions can impair your visibility to others. You should ensure you have appropriate solutions such as hi-viz jacket, lights, reflectors etc. and understand their best deployment |

You do not need a licence to drive a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair, but you may have to register it. Only certain types can be driven on the road. The law calls these types of vehicles ‘invalid carriages’.
Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs come in 2 categories:
You do not need to register a class 2 invalid carriage.
You must register class 3 invalid carriages if you intend to use it on the road.
