The Story Behind eFOLDi
We’re eFOLDi, and we’re on a mission to make mobility easier, lighter, and a whole lot more fun. Our story isn’t just about a product—it’s about real people, real challenges, and the determination to create something life-changing.
How It All Began
It all started back in 2012 with our founder, Jianmin Wang. After an injury left him struggling with mobility, he found that traditional scooters were either too heavy, too clunky, or just not practical. So, being the brilliant inventor he is, he built his own!
This wasn’t just any scooter—it was lightweight, foldable, and designed to give people their independence back. And just like that, the first eFOLDi was born.
A Father-Daughter Dream Team
Fast forward to 2013, when Jianmin’s daughter, Sumi, faced her own health challenges. Seeing how her dad’s invention had changed his life, she knew it could help so many others too. So, she took a huge leap—left her career, set up SunTech UK Ltd, and made it her mission to bring eFOLDi to the world.
From day one, our goal has been simple: to create products that bring freedom, independence, and a little bit of fun back into people’s lives.
Our Big Moments
April 2013: The eFOLDi Scooter is Invented
Jianmin Wang develops the first eFOLDi scooter, addressing a significant gap in the mobility market.
February 2015: UK Operations Are Established
Sumi leaves her position at Queen Mary University of London to fully commit to eFOLDi’s growth and success.
March 2016: Winner of British Invention of the Year
eFOLDi receives this prestigious award, gaining recognition within the mobility industry.
July 2016: Seed Funding from Virgin Media
A standout presentation at the VOOM Awards leads Sir Richard Branson to describe eFOLDi as “folding magic,” resulting in significant investment.
February 2017: Launch of the eFOLDi MK1.0
The first-of-its-kind MK1.0 rolls off the assembly line, marking a significant milestone for our team.
August 2018: Introduction of the eFOLDi MK1.5 and Power Chair
We unveil improved versions of our scooter and introduce the Power Chair, expanding our product line.
April 2020: Investment from Guinness Asset Management
This partnership propels eFOLDi toward further market expansion and innovation.
July 2020: Launch of the eFOLDi Lite
Weighing just 15kg (17kg with battery), the eFOLDi Lite exemplifies our commitment to lightweight, portable mobility solutions.
December 2020: Company expansion
More space is needed so eFOLDi moves into new expanded premises at Ormside Way.
September 2021: The Lite wins Innovation of the Year at NAIDEX
eFOLDi receives this prestigious award, gaining further recognition within the mobility industry.
February 2023: The Lite- receives FDA approval in the USA
Offering extra assurance for consumers across the pond about the credentials of eFOLDi.
June 2024: Direct-to-consumer selling in Australia goes live.
Making it even easier for Australian consumers to enjoy the freedom eFOLDi brings!
June 2024: A new & improved LITE model is released
Seven new features, making it seven times better!
March 2024: The Lite awarded Best in Show at NAIDEX
eFOLDi receives this prestigious award, adding to our collection of recognition within the mobility industry.
February 2025: Direct-to-consumer selling in Germany goes live.
Making it even easier for German consumers to enjoy the freedom eFOLDi brings!
February 2025: Launch of the eFOLDi Navigator
Weighing just 12kg (14kg with battery), the eFOLDi Navigator enhances comfort for everyday powerchair users.
March 2025: Healthcare Matters Award Winner
eFOLDi receives this prestigious award, gaining recognition within the professional healthcare sector.
